How We Got Here

Online Videos & YouTube.com: The term viral video sprang up several years ago with the launch of the mega popular video sharing site Youtube.com (February 2005). Youtube.com founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim in their infinite wisdom made it simple for anyone with a video camera to upload and “share” a video. Video creators didn’t have to worry about expensive bandwidth bills, or site creation – just upload via a simple point and click web interface. Suddenly anyone could upload their video to the web, the site became extremely popular as members began to upload their video’s to YouTube.com

Viral Marketing: Careful, It’s Contagious …
At it’s basic form viral marketing is simply someone sharing an ideas, message, service or product with one or more people. A friend telling you about this amazing new sci-fi movie “The Matrix” is an example of viral marketing. Telling a co-worker about a great new restaurant in town is another example of the viral marketing. This type of marketing is based on simple human behaviour, the web magnifies the effect through basic communication like email, networking and social sites. Web 2.0 websites such as Youtube.com rely on viral marketing to self promote them self combined with user created content.

Making Money With Online Video & Video Marketing:
Today their are dozens of online video sites that allow “user created videos” to be easily uploaded. Some of these video websites offer what is called ”revenue sharing” where advertising revenue is split between the video publisher and the video site.

YouTube.com officially launched their “partner” program (December 2007) to a select number of top tier video publishers. While other sites like Revver.com and Metacafe make revenue sharing accessible to all. However their are numerous ways to monetize viral videos. From contextual ad programs like Adsense, Yahoo Publishers Network and Chitika to affiliate programs and product sales “revenue sharing” is just one aspect of earning money through the use of online video.
